This sounds like maybe what will happen if you don't link against the SO but use the header. you need to link to the libngram.so once you've built it. Beyond that, I can't say -- haven't seen this problem before.

Hi Guillaume, sorry for the slow turnaround, just getting notified about your question now. Even though you added the test words to the symbol table, the fact that they had no observations in the training set means that they have no ngrams in the resulting model automaton, hence the empty result. What you need to do instead is to build your symbol table from just the training text, and then when you use farcompilestrings on the test section, you need to tell it what the out-of-vocabulary symbol is, with the switch --unknown_symbol="<unk>" (or whatever you make the unknown symbol -- ngramsymbols creates <unk> by default).
